As part of the acclaimed series filmed for BBC 3, Will Thorp appeared as a TV executive in this dramatisation based on the life of Hughie Green, considered a national treasure and the genial host of the original talent show 'Opportunity Knocks' that bought the likes of Victoria Wood and Lenny Henry to the attention of the public. But behind the scenes, he was a very different character...

 'HUGHIE GREEN, MOST SINCERELY'

1934 aged fourteen, Hughie Green is a shy nervous performer - pushed onto perform on stage in Canada where he was born.

A quarter of a century later, having moved to England, he has become a huge name on British TVs as the quiz-master of 'Double Your Money' a phenomenally popular game show .

Whilst on tour with the stage show version of Double Your Money, Hughie meets a former show business acquaintance Jess Yates, who now runs a family hotel with his wife Elaine. For it's day this was an unconventional marriage, with a sixteen year age difference between Jess and Elaine - Hughie accepts their offer and stays with them.

The next fifteen years, Hughie becomes and remains the top name in British light entertainment, hosting a talent contest 'Opportunity Knocks' with his catch-phrase "I mean that most sincerely" copied by all the leading impersonators, and launching the careers of child stars Lena Zavaroni (who died young, having developed anorexia) and musical theatre actress and performer Bonnie Langford. He seems to have a genuine loyalty to his audience and his staff. But he is also shown to have a weakness, and has become a serial womaniser, taking advantage of his fame and the power that it brings him, frequently indulging in sex in his dressing-room with female fans.

His wife leaves him taking their son and daughter.

As if things are turning full circle, Jess Yates reappears on television, hosting a Sunday evening religious programme called 'Stars On Sunday'. He becomes Hughie's producer and the two men clash. Hughie knows a secret, from all those years ago staying at the hotel, something that Jess has no idea - that he and not Jess is the father of Elaine's child, Paula - who herself, after her marriage to Bob Geldof and her relationship with tragic Australian rock star Michael Hutchense, accidently killed herself with a drugs overdose. She herself had just learned the truth about who her real biological father was.
